Thinking about Independence

Why should I go independent?

Should I register my own RIA or join one?

What do you do for broker/dealer services?

Does your broker/dealer take a part of my RIA revenue?

What are the start-up costs?

What are the typical fees if I was to join an existing RIA?

How do I interact with other RIAs associated with the firm?

Why should I go independent?

There are a lot of reasons why advisers are going independent.  Ultimately you are the only one that can answer this question.  The primary reasons we find with our network are:

Doing the right thing for the client;

No corporate mandate;

Having my own business;

Building long term value in my business.

Should I register my own RIA or join one?

The prevailing "industry" thought is to join an existing RIA. We do not think it is in the best long-term interest of the advisor or his/her clients. We feel that as an independent business owner you do not need to promote someone else’s brand.  Your clients have decided to continue with you because of you, not because of the firm you join!!  We feel you should invest the time upfront to do things correctly and open your own RIA.

If you still wish to join an existing RIA, we have a network of RIAs that you can join.

What do you do for broker/dealer services?

We are focused on independent RIA advisors.  However, we understand that some advisors may require some brokerage services.  We have relations with a small number of independent broker/dealers that specifically do not charge a fee on your RIA business.  NOTE: Most broker/dealers will charge a fee on your RIA business.
